Brooks: In His New Tape, Bin Laden Sounds Like He’s Been ‘Reading Lefty Blogs’

Last night on PBS’ The NewsHour, New York Times columnist David Brooks compared 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden’s latest video message to “lefty blogs,” saying the al Qaeda head is like “one of these childish people posting rants at the bottom of the page.” He then went to describe why he drew such a comparison:

You read this thing, and it’s like he’s been sitting around reading lefty blogs, and he’s one of these childish people posting rants at the bottom the page, you know, Noam Chomsky and all this stuff.

You can’t help read it and not laugh at it, occasionally, because it is just absurd. It’s flying this way, and that way, weird conspiracy theories, and mortgages, global warming. He throws it all in there.

Watch it:

Brooks’ comments are part of an effort by prominent right-wing voices to try to tie Osama bin Laden to the left. At Hot Air, Allahpundit claimed bin Laden sounded like a “socialist icon,” invoking many of the same passages Brooks did. At Political Vindication, Uncle Seth the Noble went further, claiming bin Laden sounded like Daily Kos’ Markos Moulitsas:

Osama’s Left wing platitudes stand out remarkably in this transcript! After reading this, who do you think he is pulling for in the next election…. Republicans or Democrats? Seriously, would this not pump up the entire Democratic Party base if this speech were given at next year’s convention? I could see Markos ‘Screw Them’ Moulitsas break dancing in the background as the cheers and applauses roared in from the Democratic diehards. Can you hear them? “Osama for President!”

Frank J, a Pajamas Media blogger, concludes “Kos has to get this guy as a diarist before HuffPo does.”

Considering bin Laden’s threat yesterday to “escalate the killing and fighting against” America, Brooks and his fellow conservatives’ attempts at humor — and that’s a charitable reading of their words — are especially insulting, as it impugns not only the patriotism, but also the character and intelligence of literally millions of daily participants in the progressive blogosphere.

Digg It!

Transcript:

JIM LEHRER: And finally tonight, here comes Petraeus, and other stories of the week, as analyzed by Shields and Brooks, syndicated columnist Mark Shields, New York Times columnist David Brooks.Mark, first, have a thought about the new bin Laden tape?

MARK SHIELDS, Syndicated Columnist: I guess only after listening to Judy’s discussion, two things hit me. One, there were no overt threats in it to the United States. And, two, it was quite self-indulgent, I thought, on his part, I mean, in that sense. It obviously was made rather recently, too.

JIM LEHRER: Scary in any way?

DAVID BROOKS, Columnist, New York Times: No, ludicrous. I mean, on one hand, he’s a malevolent guy who killed 3,000 Americans. But you read this thing, and it’s like he’s been sitting around reading lefty blogs, and he’s one of these childish people posting rants at the bottom the page, you know, Noam Chomsky and all this stuff.

You can’t help read it and not laugh at it, occasionally, because it is just absurd. It’s flying this way, and that way, weird conspiracy theories, and mortgages, global warming. He throws it all in there.

The one thing that leapt out — and Bruce Hoffman and the others mentioned this — was how Western it is. And a friend of mine, Reuel Gerecht, points out that there’s this argument that Western ideas never permeated into the Arab world, but in fact it’s all — I mean, a lot of the worst ideas from the West have permeated in, and he’s picked up Noam Chomsky, and he’s picked up some of the anti-globalization stuff. And that’s what infuses this.

brooks rants and we cringe.! NO! we have 500 days – and if anyone thinks for one second that th goopers are going to go quietly you are nuts!
    So, what do we do?
    go quietly?

  3. saneamerican says:

The right wing wackos are circling the wagons because they will be decimated in the upcoming elections.

  4. Clyde the Ripper says:

Just proves one thing: OBL is a hell of a lot more astute than the fools spouting off about him. At least he can recognize the problems in the world even if his solutions may be a little harsh. He doesn’t run around with his head firmly implanted in the bushco rectum as most of the right wing-nut clowns do.

  5. Jim says:

From Bush to Brooks, Osama bin Laden knows how to play his useful idiots.

  6. ronjazz, trollcrusher says:

well, Brooks might be attempting to impugn the patriotism, charactger and intelligence of the left. but, being Brooks, he is credilbility-free, and his every puking up of his addled talking points takes his employers further into irrelevance. a sure sign of how far the NYT has slipped is the continued employment of this simple-minded tool.

  7. barfly says:

Weak attempt at transferrance. Anyone who spends time reading blogs knows the nuttiest stuff comes from the Right.

  8. ronjazz, trollcrusher says:

Brooks is also perturbed that Osama didnt pick up on Hitler’s writings, thus is ignoring the Bush regime entirely. NOT FAIR!

  9. RUCerious says:

Yeah, Osama slept in our guest bedroom last night.
    Damn bloggers.
(Boy that’ll get the NSA on my ass, right?)

  10. Dave C says:

At least Brooks has dropped the ridiculous premise that he was somehow against GWB in the past. That facade was stripped away in about 5 minutes.

  11. troqua says:

So, the pajamas media crowd has coordinated an anti-progressive message in order not to have to address the the real issue.

Why is this sonofabltch still around, Mr. Bush!

  14. Guido, OBGYN, Lover says:

What an insult. What a piece of crap this Brooks is. What a freakin traitor.

I’m all over PBS on this one.

How long can we allow the Republicans to keep calling peaceful people terrorists?????????????????????????????

hell, from the little i heard, i thought he sounded

  16. candideinnc says:

How silly of me! I thought it was the Right wing that was naive enough to bring us into a meaningless quagmire of a war! Golly day, could have fooled me! I now find out that it is the Left that is childish.

Mr. Brooks, you have been banging the drums of war for years. You are not a sophisticate. You are a fool. You are worse than a fool. You instigate murder. I find you disgusting.

  17. katy says:

damn… sure wish you hadn’t given that frankj any kind of attention…
oy… that one does not need a bigger ego…

  18. electricphoto says:

In the movie “10″, there is a line that “when Mrs. Whipple breaks wind, we beat the dog”. That’s exactly what the Republicans do, every crime they commit or every lie they tell can be exorcized by just beating up Democrats.

The question is why does the Media love to give voice to liars and mud throwing partisan bigots like Brooks… what a buch of crap!!!!!!!

  19. Bonnie says:

“it impugns not only the patriotism, but also the character and intelligence of literally millions of daily participants in the progressive blogosphere.”

Boy, have you got that right! Now, what are going to do to counteract that slander??????

  20. hil says:

Brooks isn’t fit to wipe Noam Chomskys ass

  21. HighPockets says:

Bin Laden’s annual video is a stark reminder that Bush and his neocons have failed big. Wrong country, wrong war, wrong enemy. Bin Laden also reminds the world that is was he and not Saddam Hussein who killed Americans on US soil.

    “wanted, dead or alive” …

wanted, for purposes of intimidation, propaganda…

  23. tarazan says:

    ‘Osama Bin Convenience’ surfacing again.

  24. Badger says:

Brooks and the rest of the Republican propaganda mill are vociferously attacking the progressive Blogs. Why??? EFFECTIVENESS
The Republicans had been relying on the old principle first stated by Mark Twain…” A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting its shoes on.”
Well, thanks to the internet and blogs, the truth is back in the race.
Anytime someone attacks the messenger, and avoids the message, they are worried about the message.
70% of Americans have rejected Bush’s Iraq policy…not because they were unduly influenced by the progressive blogs…but because they recognize the truth when they see it.

  25. bilbogaggins says:

The Republicans are too funny. They really are running scared. Why would Osama want the Democrats to win? Bush has been the best thing that ever happened to al Quaeda. Bush has recruited tens of thousands of new recruits for al Quaeda, he has bankrupted this country and the has turned the world against us. That is what Osama wanted. Bush gave it all to him. So, I don’t understand why anyone would think that Osama would like the Democrats to win.

  26. tarazan says:

In the vidoe Bin Ladin who is living in a cave and supposed to be surviving on dialysis machine looks younger with a thick black beard covering most of his face even his lips while Bush is getting his hair more gray as he is getting older..
I wonder what kind of ‘Just For Men’ Bin Ladin is using..

  27. Starve-A-Bush_Feed-A-Beaver says:

First, contrary to what Mr. Brooks says, 3000 Americans did not die in the Twin Towers. More than 500 of the dead were foreign nationals, from various countries.

This type of claim, comparing Bin Laden’s views to those of the left worked for Bush before. On the eve of the 2004 election, if you recall, Bin Laden issued a video tape. In that tape, Bin Laden was highly critical of Bush. The effect was dramatic. Talking heads from the right wing went into a veritable frenzy on the airwaves, suggesting that Bin Laden supported John Kerry and therefore true Americans should stand behind George Bush. Osama helped Bush get re-elected and we can understand why: Al Qaeda has grown by leaps and bounds since the invasion of Iraq and, the more we stay bogged down in a quagmire, the more influence Bin Laden acquires in the Moslem world.

Now that we are on the eve of another important milestone, the Iraq report that might determine whether we stay or leave Iraq, Bin Laden again issues a tape. I don’t have to tell you what effect Bin Laden is trying to have on the American people, as I’m sure you’re capable of determining that for yourselves.

  28. Clyde the Ripper says:

    #26 tarazan

The answer to your question vis-a-vis OBL and GWB lies in the fact that Muslims do not consume alcoholic beverages.

  29. toasterhead says:

The trolls must be asleep this morning. I haven’t been called a terrorist or traitor once in this thread.

  30. Troll says:

PBS is a now a Reichwing tool. Time to defund it and end this corporate welfare.

  31. RWeSafer says:

    Another miss by the right…

Bin Laden attacks the US and we attack Iraq.

He taunts us again and the right goes after the left.

Couldnt find a target if it was in neon and glowed in the dark…

  32. Zanubiyah says:

First off, someone should note that Usama bin Laden is still a threat after 6 years. How one man who has done so much evil has avoided detection is beyond me, except that the “administration” is keeping him alive to make sure they have a focus of fear with they need it.

Secondly…How is it that Usama’s video would be in the hands of the “administration” before it is released on the normal channels, such as “terrorist webpages”?. Why would the terrorist webpages announce preview of a video from a fugitive? If Usama is such an “enemy” to the west, and his video may be filled with “vieled threats” or calls to act, or viewed as “propaganda” to al Qui’da and the Islamic terrorist groups, why isn’t it released at all if it could be intercepted before released? Who translates these videos anyway? To me, this seems so much like a marketing scheme for a movie.

Thirdly…How did bin laden’s expressions on this video come to be more specificly political to be friendly to the progressive movement. It almost sounds as if it was created in the Fox News Studios. It seems a man who dispises the west would not express especially progressive views and use names of progressive authors.

Forthly…Why do these videos seem to “come up” when we reach times of decision about the war in Iraq, or major elections?

Hey…I am just expressing a common need to know. I am not making any acusations here. I belive these are rational, intelligent questions that increasingly those who are coming out of the closet of fear are asking ourselves, and wondering how we let ourselves go this far without common sense and good judgement.

  33. Dave C says:

    Comment by Zanubiyah — September 8, 2007 @ 1:18 pm

OBL is a symbol of this administration. He’s almost a member.

  34. Del Capslock says:

Brooks and the right have watched the evidence mount that their world view is not only profoundly flawed, but infantile and self-serving. Figures they would look to a Bin Laden rant to try to prop it back up.

  35. Marie says:

Anyone think the tape might be a forgery?
Written by someone in the White House?
The language is indeed westernized – not like previous tapes.

The timing is suspicious again, now the language is suspicious, and he even looks suspicious. They tell is the tape is authentic, is it?

  36. NastyDiaper says:

Republican’s. never at a loss to blame Democrats for their failures.

As for Osama, sounds like he’s been doing lots of things.

    He should be lifting Lily’s.

Any thoughts on that Brooks? No? Didn’t think so.

  37. wwz says:

UBL is being shrewd here, I think. He could have come out and said “kill kill kill blah blah blah,” goading hawks into a frenzy of nationalism prompting them to act foolishly as he has in the past. That mission was accomplished long ago and continues apace without further prompting.

What he did this time was divide Americans even sharper, and by taking a more social construct in his message poisoned the well. He knew what Brooks and those like him would say before they did. Very shrewd.

Jury’s out on that one. Muslim scholars say it’s either forbidden or encouraged. The Quraan says in some passages that a white beard is a sign of wisdom, but in other passages says that ladies love a guy with a dark beard. I’d think UBL would want to go for the “elder statesman” look, but what do I know?

  63. ace says:

I’m sure the fact that Brooks is parroting this talking point, which just happens to be identical to much of the troll banter on the blogs this weekend, is purely coincidental…just like these other coincidences:

Coincidences that seem to have led to a World War…

9/11 (9:00 am) – The CIA began an exercise to simulate a plane crashing into one of it’s buildings.

Ann Tatlock, a CEO at Fiduciary Trust located in the South WTC Tower, is on her way to an early morning charity event at the U.S. Strategic Command Center at Offutt AFB in Nebraska — where Bush later flew to for “safety” — hosted by billionaire Warren Buffett and is escorted by military officers into an officer’s lounge with a TV and watches the 2nd hijacked plane crash right into her offices.

WTC Owner Larry Silverstein is not in his office on the 88th floor of the North Tower because of a “doctors appointment.”

Donald Rumsfeld is in his office at the Pentagon talking about missile defense and the risk of terrorism and predicts there will be a terrorist attack two minutes before the first plane crashes into the WTC.

FAA memo says Flight 11 passenger was shot who happened to be a multi-millionaire elite Israeli military commando who understands Arabic and who happened to be sitting directly in front of one of the alleged hijackers.

On the morning of 9/11, Sen. Bob Graham (D-FL) and Rep. Porter Goss (R-FL) — the chairmen of the Senate and House Intelligence Committees — along with Sen. John Kyl (R-AZ) and some other members of the House Intelligence Committee are in a meeting at the Capital building with the director of Pakistani intelligence (ISI), Lt. Gen. Mahmud Ahmad, who authorized a $100,000 wire transfer to alleged lead 9/11 hijacker, Mohamed Atta.

The instant messaging service Odigo, says that two of its workers at their Israeli facility received messages two hours before the Twin Towers attack on September 11 predicting the attack would happen.

The WTC 7’s fire alarm system is placed on “TEST” mode for an eight hour period for “maintenance or other testing” in which any alarms that are received from the system are not shown on the operator’s display and are considered the result of the maintenance or testing and are ignored.

NORAD was in day two of a week long exercise called “Vigilant Guardian” in which some of it’s military participants thought the first reports of the hijackings later on in the day were “part of the exercise.”

A Pentagon rescuer mentions how “eerie” it was that the Pentagon’s MASCAL emergency plane crash plan that he had trained twice for was “very similar to what actually happened”.

Personnel from the Walter Reed Army Medical Center who helped the rescuing efforts at the Pentagon also say that it was “eerie” how an emergency situation they went through just two weeks before the attack helped prepare them for the Pentagon crash.

A group of young men were witnessed on top of a white van celebrating while they were filming themselves with the burning WTC in the background in which they were later arrested and identified as Israeli citizens — some later found to be Israeli spies — with one saying upon being arrested, “We are Israeli. We are not your problem. Your problems are our problems. The Palestinians are the problem.” They were found with large amounts of cash, a box cutter, multiple foreign passports, maps linking them to the blasts, and a bomb-sniffing dogs reacted as if detecting explosives in their van.

Within minutes of the explosion at the Pentagon, the FBI confiscates security videos that had captured the crash from a nearby gas station and hotel.

9/11 (10:31 am) – The commander of NORAD says he didn’t receive the presidential order to shoot down any of the hijacked planes until after Flight 93 crashed and the 9/11 Commission report confirms NORAD didn’t get this order until 28 minutes after the crash.

Video coverage shows Palestinians rejoicing over news of the 9/11 attacks, but later the celebrations were found out to have been staged.

Larry Silverstein, the WTC leaseholder, said he decided that the smartest thing to do to the WTC 7 was to “pull it” when a NYFD commander told him that he wasn’t sure they were going to be able to contain the fire in the building and said after they made the decision to “pull” the WTC 7, they “watched the building collapse.” The term “pull” was used to describe the demolition of the WTC 6 days later.

White House staff are given the powerful anthrax antibiotic Cipro, a full month before the first cases of anthrax were reported.

When Benjamin Netanyahu, former prime minister of Israel and elite special forces member for the IDF, was asked what the 9/11 attacks meant for relations between the United States and Israel, he replied, “It’s very good.”

President Bush’s cousin, Jim Pierce, escaped death from the WTC thanks to a “schedule change” the night before.

FEMA in NYC prior to 9-11 for Project TRIPOD terror drill, scheduled for 9-12

As of this writing, June 2, 2004, the transcript of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s testimony to the 9-11 Commission during the May 18-19, 2004 hearings in New York is the only transcript of that hearing omitted from the Commission website
    (http://www.9-11commission.gov).

    Did Rudy say something wrong?

“… the reason Pier 92 was selected as a command center was because on the next day, on September 12, Pier 92 was going to have a drill, it had hundreds of people here, from FEMA, from the Federal Government, from the State, from the State Emergency Management Office, and they were getting ready for a drill for biochemical attack. So that was gonna be the place they were going to have the drill. The equipment was already there, so we were able to establish a command center there, within three days, that was two and a half to three times bigger than the command center that we had lost at 7 World Trade Center. And it was from there that the rest of the search and rescue effort was completed.”

Can someone please tell me exactly why Osama is the ‘man of the moment’??? On the one hand, the presidunce is not concerned enough to actually charge him w/9/11 let alone find and eliminate him…but then a trumped up video is supposed to cause us all to wet our pants??? Fred Thompson says that bin Laden is but a symbol (or whatnot) but everyone is screeching about the new video release…?!?!
Folks it can’t be BOTH ways…he can’t be persona non grata AND the biggest threat to us…
If someone has a good explanation, please let me know – ’cause this *ahem* ‘logic’ of playing him for two sides of the same coin…it’s just not computing to me.

  71. Abby says:

Whether it’s a genuine Bin Laden tape (unlikely) or it’s a Bush manufactured fake like many before this, what Bin Laden or the fake Bin Laden said on the tape is not important. The only important thing about this tape is the timing of the release. Why now and why not as usual as an October “surprise” right before the elections?

Bush is in Australia where their Bush, Howard, is facing a tough reelection and needs a terror boost. Here even the Democrats, who were never really anti-war (remember how they threw Sheehan under the bus?), have begun to use the anti-war message for political purposes. The US is in a real danger of changing the course in the Middle East. The stock market is not too hot with the DOW trying to touch 13000 after having touched 14000 not too long ago. Job losses are breaking new records, Republican hypocrisy and corruption are dominating the headlines………

In short, there are thousands of reasons why Bush needs a fresh Bin Laden tape and, as always, one comes out right on cue.

What the tape says in meaningless. Why at this time means everything.

  72. Dalloway says:

It’s amazing how Osama always times his video releases to achieve maximum benefit for the Cheney administration. In the new Orwellian reality, how can you be sure 1) that Osama bin Laden really exists (and that the person generally believed to be him hasn’t died or been killed), 2)the person on the tape is the real Osama bin Laden, whoever that is, and not an actor, 3) that he’s responsible for all the crimes attributed to him and 4)that he’s not either being used as a front or working for the same interests that put the Cheney administration in power, ie. the oil companies and petro-oligarchs like the Saudi royal family? We accept so much the Cheney junta tells us or has heavily redacted commission reports tell us. How do we know whether any of it is true?

  73. Jim says:

What’s scary is that many on the right, apparently including David Brooks, actually believe that “the Left” is somehow supportive of, or in cahoots with, Islamic fundamentalist maniacs like Osama bin Laden. They must believe this, I guess, to justify their continued support for the venality and arrogance of the Bush administration and the Republican Party.

In fact, most people on the Left are suspicious of all forms of fundamentalism. Ironically, this includes political ideologies that are rigid or dogmatic. It’s hard to imagine that David Brooks really reads “lefty blogs.” More likely, he gets his information about “lefty blogs” from right-wing sources.

  91. Abby says:

What was really comical was how the liberal media hyped up the imminent release of the tape with a couple of days of hype before the fact.

When it’s so well orchestrated and when the timing is oh, so perfect, someone did too good of a job. A job that has CON written all over it.

We have to remember that we all live in a fact-insulated bubble. We are told what they want to tell us and at a time of their choosing. When you are told that the Chinese government hacked into the Pentagon computers, you have to ask yourself WHY are they telling us this? Could it have something to do with the fact that the Chinese are not buying our debt at the same pace as they used to until three weeks ago? Could it have something to do with the fact that China recently signed a treaty of cooperation with Iran who supplies a lot of their oil and who we want to destroy because it won the “war” in Iraq?

This is America. Nothing is what it appears to be.

And since the Democratic regime allows the major corporations to support candidates, be they presidential or congressional, then there should be no need for astonishment at the Democrats’ failure to stop the war. You are the ones who say ‘money talks’ “.

This excerpt from Osama’s latest is not substantial different from what George Carlin has to say.

Michael Scheuer, author of Imperial Hubris: Why the West is Losing the War on Terror has the greater war in proper context. It is our policies that drive the hate. And whether we like it or not, the multinationals are driving policy.

In the process of our soul searching I hope that we are going to come to terms with some necessary revisions to our representational democracy. 535 individuals representing all of us has become absurd. We need to enlarge Congress several fold and institute some form of candidate subsidies that would allow actual progressives to term and get elected.

But it is clear more now than ever that we are owned; bought and paid for; and yet sold out at the same time. It’s just easier to hear it from George.

His martyr status would insure that he would live on .. in a form that couldn’t be killed.

Rather watching his now comical fake beard, as Allah (praise be him) makes a mockery of his overzealous militant servant, serves a much better goal.

Reagan’s “we never deal with terrorists” on national tv easily tops that. But Dave must have been a little child when his hero sold weapons to the same terrorists who were holding Americans hostage, and his home-schooling didn’t cover recent history, so his ignorance is to be expected.

  124. The Oracle says:

The best friends Osama bin Laden has in the United States are the right-wingers, especially the right-wingers in the Bush administration with their imperialistic oil designs on the Middle East.

This latest tape sounds to me like Republican-baiting on the part of bin Laden, throwing the right-wingers some red meat, which the right-wingers will use (or so bin Laden hopes) to bash progressive liberals, or anyone trying to stop the right-wing’s wars of aggression in the Middle East, wars that are a great al Qaeda recruiting tool.

If BushCo had kept focused on al Qaeda in Afghanistan (and western Pakistan) after 9/11, then al Qaeda would not have had the opportunity to expand it’s influence, just as Iran would have remained contained.

By attacking Iraq in 2003, BushCo expanded the Middle East war front into a totally unnecessary and insane two-front war, opening the door (in Iraq) to Iranian and al Qaedian expansionism.

Thus, it is obvious that Osama bin Laden is “playing” the right-wing nutjobs, stirring up not only their warmongering in this latest tape but giving them tools to attack progressive liberals.

Because, you see, the real threat to the evil designs of Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda comes from progressive liberals, while the right-wing nutjobs keep playing into the hands of bin Laden and the al Qaeda…especially if Bush and Cheney actually drop any bombs on Iran.

Who shifted the post-9/11 focus from capturing or killing Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan to starting a war in Iraq? Right-wing nutjobs.

Who deposed a dictator, Saddam Hussein in Iraq, who was a hated, secular adversary of Osama bin Laden’s, a secular dictator who actually stood in the way of bin Laden’s insane dream of a sharia-ruled world? Right-wing nutjobs.

So, of course, Osama bin Laden will give all the nutty right-wingers all the ammunition they need to continue their warmongering, imperialistic ways. Hey, it’s worked so well for bin Laden up to now.

  125. Chocolate Jesus says:

on page 5 he complains about “insane taxes”– a left wing talking point, right upright cleft?

on page 6 he criticizes the russians.- a left wing talking point, right upright cleft?

on page 7 he boasts there are virtually no taxes in Islam, only a small FLAT RATE tax! – a left wing talking point, right upright cleft?

one more question upright cleft… if you learned Osama was against abortion, would you support it?

  131. barfly says:

“I mean, what’s so wrong about questioning your patriotism, given that your favorite pastime is questioning our basic humanity?”

Questioning one’s government isn’t unpatriotic. But questioning a republican’s basic humanity isn’t out of bounds, given how much you guys talk of “the sanctity of life,” while discounting all the dead caused by your geo-political experiments.

  133. The Sanity Inspector says:

Think how much you have to hate the idea of innocence and free will to equate unborn fetuses with terrorists. A devout humanitarian would want to preserve the lives of both. A practical utilitarian could see his way clear to eliminating both of them. But it must take years of exposure to the soft sciences to arrive at the liberal viewpoint.

What liberals think of as their patriotism is all too often just garden-variety self-congratulation. You’re the lonely voice of reason in a land of mindless pod-people? You’d have been bones in a Virginia forest long ago, if that were true.

on page 6 he criticizes the russians.- a left wing talking point, right upright cleft?

on page 7 he boasts there are virtually no taxes in Islam, only a small FLAT RATE tax! – a left wing talking point, right upright cleft?

one more question upright cleft… if you learned Osama was against abortion, would you support it?

  139. Chocolate Jesus says:

    >Not til you tell the court if you’ve stopped beating your wife yet.

i dont have a wife i think the concept of marriage is stupid. whats your answer to my question troll?

what you asked is a compound question. it makes the assumption you have a wife and you beat your wife.

you’re no lawyer, so stop with the fallacious objection.

my question makes no assumptions. eitther osama is anti-abortion or hes not. either you are anti abortion or you’re not.

if both he and you are anti-abortion, then you’re admitting you agree with osama about something.

if your pro-choice, then i guess the question is moot.

    are you pro choice?

  141. The Sanity Inspector says:

one more question righttard trolls… if you learned Osama was against abortion, would you support it?

Any point of agreement in your clever little list is far overshadowed by the spectacle of Osama imitating proggs: pretending to advise and improve America, while not-so-secretly hating her to the core. The great lesson of 9/11 was that there is nothing, literally nothing, that can induce proggs to float down from their higher moral plane and take their country’s part in a time of peril. For progressives, especially of the intellectual bent, “ideas are the only homeland”. At least OBL doesn’t bite the hand that feeds him, or soil the home that shelters him.

“While Islam permits preventing pregnancy for valid reasons, it does not allow doing violence to it once it occurs.

Muslim jurists have agreed unanimously that after the fetus is completely formed and has been given a soul, abortion is haram. It is also a crime, the commission of which is prohibited to the Muslim because it constitutes an offense against a complete, living human being. Jurists insist that the payment of blood money (diya) becomes incumbent if the baby is aborted alive and then died, while a fine of lesser amount is to be paid if it is aborted dead. “

Actually, Ward demonstrates the sort of benchmark libtard academicide victims strive for—a little fake CV, a little plagiarism, a little bogus “scholarfakery” and you’ve got tenure! Noam Chomsky probably took the same route, but he’s already done his damage. S***canning Ward made me almost as happy as waking up every day in Florida—the state that saved the nation from people like those who populate [or perhaps infest?] this thread.

  152. PFT says:

I can only conclude from that tape that we must have captured Bin Laden and he is in a safe house somewhere. If that translation is correct, it is obvious Karl Rove spent his first week in retirement writing up the speech for Bin Laden. Another CIA or Pentagon psy-ops production.

Linking OBL to Democrats and in opposition to the war and capitalism is genious. Capitalism+ War+ Republicans against the Democrats + Terrorism. It’s Orwellian truth speak.

But even if you do not buy this, even the stupidest person should not fail to see that the obvious consequences of putting out this tape at this time provides support to Republicans and their War in Iraq. Therefore, Bin Laden is obviously supporting the Republicans by speaking out against the War and Bush policies and a continuation of the War in Iraq. A vote for Republicans and support for the War in Iraq therefore makes you an ally of Bin Laden since they both want the same thing, for us to continue our War in Iraq.

Logically then, Bin Laden and Bush/Republicans are simply allies in the continuation of the War on Terror. It’s good for terrorists, and it’s good for capitalists. You can not have war without an Enemy, and you can not make enough weapons to earn enough profit without using them in War.
Terrorists=Enemy=War=Profit. Those who are against War are against Profit for the Military-Industrial-Media-Intelligence Complex (MIMIC).

On the political side, the war can be said to be between Democrats on the one hand and an alliance of Republicans, Capitalists, Terrorists (Bin Laden/AQ). But wait, most of the Democrats are bought by the Capitalists and support a long term presence in Iraq, and those members of AIPAC support doing Iran too. So whats left. Us! This is actually a war against the Working Class.

Capitalists, Terrorists, Democrats, Republicans all working together to spend our money on Wars and get rich while they ship our jobs to China and allow illegals to come into our country to keep wages low. If the masses wake up, well they just passed a bunch of laws and issued a bunch of Executive orders which allow them to handle that just fine.

    Good night.

Choco! (Still getting used to the name change.) Nope, I still prefer lower taxes. I fully acknowledge the areas in which conservatives agree with osama; disapproval of unnecessary taxes, drug and alcohol use, adultery, homosexuality. But it’s important for progs to now admit their similarities with osama in light of his latest message, since it is practically the same message you progs espouse here everyday. C’mon, own up to it. You’ll feel better for it. ;)

  163. upright left says:

Yes, Bin Laden’s rant was sophmoric and non-linear to an educated westerner but that’s no reason not to take him seriously. The Republican line is that he’s irrelevant – an excuse for the war in Iraq. But a tape like OBL’s latest surely rallies Al Qaeda and as Reuters reports, could be a signal for attacks.

No need to speculate any longer. Comment by upright left — September 9, 2007 @ 3:05 am

For those of us that CAN READ, that’s true, but for a RETARD like you, NOT SO MUCH ;)

I know you are ticked off that there is finally proof of what conservatves have been saying all along: “Progs have the same complaints about America as osama.” But, things will settle down in a few days. Comment by upright left — September 9, 2007 @ 3:05 am

Yeah, progs just scream that we aren’t religious enough, JUST LIKE OSAMA’S SPEECH!! ;)

People have short memories. Comment by upright left — September 9, 2007 @ 3:05 am

You mean like YOURS, where you forgot Osama was a RELIGIOUS CONSERVATIVE JUST LIKE YOU ;)

In a few days, the only ones thinking about this will be progs and conservatives who frequent blogs.
    Comment by upright left — September 9, 2007 @ 3:05 am

Yeah, because everyone associates religious conservatives with Dems ;)

Who knows, maybe the tape will turn out to be a fake and we’ll go back to not having one easy source to validate prog similarities to osama. ;)
    Comment by upright left — September 9, 2007 @ 3:05 am

Yeah, we all trust EXACTLY what Osama says, since he’s a RELIGIOUS CONSERVATIVE that calls for MURDERING PEOPLE – JUST LIKE YOU ;)

  187. michaelIsRetarded says:

Ah, the USEFUL IDIOTS like DOWNRIGHT STUPID, just can’t help Osama ENOUGH!

  188. upright left says:

Sure it did, for you – dumbass ;) Anything Osama says he’s for, you say you’re against, like a good little useful idiot ;)

    Comment by michaelIsRetarded — September 9, 2007 @ 2:57 am

I’m sure you’ll be providing proof of this any time now, retard. I know how you progs don’t believe anything unless it’s accompanied by proof, even commonly accepted things like prog similarity to osama. ;)

  189. upright left says:

Ah, the USEFUL IDIOTS like DOWNRIGHT STUPID, just can’t help Osama ENOUGH!

    Comment by michaelIsRetarded — September 9, 2007 @ 3:11 am

Someone really ticked you off with the “useful idiot” label, eh retard? Ya gotta stop letting people get to ya like that, bud. It’s so hard for anyone to take you seriously when you get all worked up like this. Calm down, buddy, and make some sense. So osama thinks like you, there are worse things in the world to have happen. Well, a few anyway. ;)

  190. slick says:

It’s sad that you can’t accept the reality of what’s happened.
It’s not the first time UBL has used left-wing talking points.

    Have you no shame?

  191. Wiliam Cormier says:

When we listen to them talk about it only being propaganda, and there’s “really nothing to worry about” except their wounded egos, I believe Osama Bin Laden sent a signal to start another large-scale attack or a series of coordinated smaller attacks.

They can’t have it both ways; either Al Qaeda has reemerged and is a viable international threat again, or they’re not – Period!

Fox News Spins Bin Laden’s New Video and The War on Terror

  192. Bruno Hauptmann says:

Faux noise is Osama best agent. They’d have him on for an interview if they could. Goebbels would be proud of them.

  193. starwheel says:

Funny how Brooks compares bin Laden’s rants to lefty blogs.

Doesn’t he listen to right wing talk radio???? Talk about childish rants.

  194. David says:

Brooks is not childish and his writings sure kick the heck out of most of these comments on the end of the stories. You should show some respect for once even though im sure the next post will flame me or call me a nazi or just spout obsenities.

  195. jjcomet says:

“Sure I could fly, but since we are all well aware of what the similarities are, that is totally unnecessary. It would almost appear that you are asking me to go to the trouble to post it just so you will have control of the exchange here.”

And that’s all you need to know about the intellectual honesty of the far right. They actually try to make a virtue of their inability to back up any of their assertions. I notice that “control of the exchange” is what’s really important here, not whether or not the original argument has any merit. If the facts support your position, “control of the exchange” shouldn’t really be a problem – especially in an interactive mdium in which no one except the moderator truly exercises any “control.” And since he/she hasn’t blocked your posts, it’s clear that even that objection is bogus, one more fig leag to cover the fact that you are either unable to defend your position intellectually or simply too lazy to do so.

  196. Elisa says:

I suspect Osama gets a lot more fodder in the Conservative blogs–they’re so full of tough talk–like pre-teen boys on a playground, plus he can learn a lot more words that just aren’t in any dictionary. I don’t mean just mispelled but legitimate words, but words one might hear at a bar fight or dogfight. I know our foreign policy shows a certain lack of, shall we say, intellect, and out president barely breaks a hundred on a good day, Osama might get a chuckle out of some of the weido comments I read from that end of the spectrum. I know I do.

  197. Horatio says:

Osama Bin Laden was employed by the CIA, like Saddam Hussein, Manuel Noriega and a host of others who have become and will in the future become a “terrorist” when it’s convenient for them to become a “terrorist” in the eyes of the US Government; and there is no reason to doubt Osama is still employed by the CIA.

  198. Juliette says:

Where does David Brooks find the time to do political commentary when he allegedly spends so much of his time with his panties around his ankles in the public toilets at Herald Square?

  199. Neeko says:

I’ll say it again. Bin Laden wants Republicans to “lead” because they do such a bad job of trying to kill him.

If Gore had taken his rightful place as President, Osama would have been killed years ago.

So neocons equal Jesus to you robots eh? How about you fast until your version of reality becomes true? You and the Islamic fundamentalists have so much in common.

  200. Gryphen says:

Well I certainly hope is quoting form “lefty blogs”.

I have not been sending him my updates for three years for nothing.

  201. procrastipundit says:

He does sound like a “lefty,” but that doesn’t mean that “lefties” have to take his side. Hitler was an ardent anti-Communist, but that doesn’t mean that Truman’s and Reagan’s anti-Communist beliefs were wrong. The man clearly sees that many people are angry with Bush and thinks he can get them to his side by talking like them. Already people who supported attacking Afghanistan are calling that war a waste and gleefully pointing at every poppy that blossoms in the fields of that recovering failed state. No wonder bin Laden uses their talking points. All you have to do now is to show him that he’s wrong at that you’re civilized first, American second, and Bush-hating somewhere down the line. That you have as much in common with bin Laden as your grandparents did with Hitler, which is to say, almost nothing. I hope.

  202. upright left says:

Why would Osama want to help Liberals upright left,
    Comment by michaelIsRetarded — September 9, 2007 @ 2:49 am

You’re really beginning to earn your name, retard. He wants to help you because he’s one of you. That’s the whole point here, bud. ;)

  203. upright left says:

Faux noise is Osama best agent. They’d have him on for an interview if they could. Goebbels would be proud of them.

    Comment by Bruno Hauptmann — September 9, 2007 @ 8:56 am

And that would really be a problem for those progs trying to deny that osama shares their views about the U.S. ;)

  204. upright left says:

Doesn’t he listen to right wing talk radio???? Talk about childish rants.

    Comment by starwheel — September 9, 2007 @ 9:38 am

Childish, maybe, but they don’t share osama’s view of America. ;)

  205. Justin Cook says:

What makes me angry is the demeaning fashion of Brooks about Chomsky. I mean on one side you have this crazy right winger who is taking advantage of his 20 minutes on Television by spouting off random absurdities without eloquently providing hardly any information behind them.

While someone such as Chomsky who has already told the world of this technique spends so much time and a lot more effort, with his many pages of work (books, blogs, papers,interviews,lectures/talks) to make sure that the whole picture and understanding is brought forth in his presentations.

How dare we allow this to continue happening…news and television has been reduced to worthless chatter degrading who ever is in opposition to the media outlet owners. The Internet still partly has its freedoms thank god…or the propaganda machines would be to much to bare…bloggers are the devil though watch out…we aren’t completely owned (yet). Free yourselves and quit supporting this horse crap we call television

  206. upright left says:

Well, bud, I could have posted the text of osama’s statement for all the proof we need, but since it is so fresh in everyone’s mind, that’s really unnecessary. Progs don’t need me to show them what they are seeing on the news several times a day already. That’s where the control issue comes in to play. Progs are trying to get conservatives to spend their time finding and posting material instead of bringing progs right back to the point that their message is osama’s message. Of course, you already knew that didn’t ya, jj. ;)

    Comment by Justin Cook — September 9, 2007 @ 3:25 pm

How about the fact that osama’s views agree largely with progs when it comes to the U.S. So if he is wrong in those opinions, so are progs. ;)

  208. jjcomet says:

Osama’s message, as it always has been, is the same as the far right’s message: “I believe I’m right because my God told me so, which justifies anything I wish to do. Don’t confuse me with inconvenient facts that might conflict with my worldview.” Even the rambling that Brooks noted echoes the hard core of Bush dead-enders.

In fact, I never asked you to “find and post material;” I asked you to detail what you saw as the similarities between the mesage on the recent bin Laden tape and what you perceive to be a “progressive” message. That requires only having a coherent position and being able to articulate it logically and intelligently. If you consider that a “control issue” then intelligent debate is perhaps not your forte.

  209. upright left says:

    Comment by jjcomet — September 9, 2007 @ 5:13 pm

Your failure to acknowledge what everyone knows is true, that osama’s message contained striking similarities to the arguments posted here by progs, is part of the control issue. We all know his message could have been lifted right from these threads, yet libs insist on asking for proof. I’m not going to post the message for you. If you can read it after I post it here, then you can look it up for yourself and read it. If I refer to something not readily available, I’ll provide a link. Osama apparently shares quite a bit of the prog view of how America should be run. That’s a fact. Sorry if it’s hard for you to take, bud. ;)

  210. fauxreal says:

    uprl-

this is a right-wing talking point (about liberals and obl) because you can find just as many issues that OBL supports, or claims to, that could allow someone to say that OBL shares a view with talibornagains, say, about how America should be run.

again, intel has noted (as in the obl video before the 2004 elections) that it is to his benefit to have republicans in power b/c they do not know how to defeat an ideology…because obl offers an ideology. He is not a nation (if he were, we should be bombing SA since 19 of the hijackers came from that bush-friendly nation.)

but you just keep on pushing that shwag talk. most americans want universal health care, do not think gays can be (or need to be) “cured” by quack religious campers. They do not think that America should have socialism for the rich, or war profiteering by the v.p. they do not like that the republicans lied and that Iraq is a disaster.

I suppose my other post is lost in the ether, but just to say that Jesus’ message had more to do with liberal goals than republican ones. And his followers were freaking communists — giving away all they owned, helping the poor– I guess you could say that Jesus and OBL share a lot of the same talking points too.

  211. ef says:

From all the way back up top.

    Right on point. Thanks

OBL is astute and his methods a little harsh? Here is one of your own apparently pining for the future OBL administration. There is so much wrong with just this one paragraph. That it went unchallenged says far too much.

Brooks and his fellow conservatives’ attempts at humor

You may laugh, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t humor.

  212. Roy Rodgers says:

Why is it that we Americans allow everything in the world & ourselves to be pigeon holed into left center and right? Conservative and Liberal?

  213. freethought says:

“Progs have the same complaints about America as osama.” – some moron above.

Right wing authoritarian bastards don’t think – they perform many logical fallacies, which to them feels like thinking. Notice the above – the complaints are similar, the moron says, so the implication is that all people who have such complaints are akin to Osama!! How damn brilliant you are, random right wing jerkwad. Osama might also identify other problems, such as existence of disease or wet farts, will this make you Osama for agreeing?!

As some stated above, some of the things Osama is attacking are real problems we need to solve(like authoritarianism at the workplace, global warming, over-taxation, and some others) – but his “solution” isn’t just “a little too harsh” – it firstly is not a solution at all, and secondly – it’s way way more than just a “little too harsh”. Choose your words carefully, lefties.

We need theocracy like we need authoritarian capitalism and a 3rd leg – not at all, and it doesn’t matter if it’s islam, or christianity, or some other set of superstitious nonsense meant to subjugate populations.

Wake up apes! The corporations are only “evil” because you all go to work every day and think submission to your assigned managers is how it should be, instead of demanding to collectively distribute profits yourselves. Profit percolates up, stays there, and is used to bribe the politicians that you supposedly elect, by those that need to sell their weapon stock piles before the expiration dates.

  214. JoeCaribe says:

Let me tell you a story. Right after the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the head of the National police force in Havana Efigenio Almejeiras told Fidel Castro he was ready and willing to sequester from Miami one of Batista”s most looked for criminal henchmen, Rolando Mansferrer aka “The Tiger”. Castro told him if he ever did that he would “order him to be shot”, because “Mansferrer is the kind of enemy we need on the other side”. bin-Laden is exactly that: the best enemy we can have on the othe side. Choose not your friends, but your enemies!

  215. JoeCaribe says:

Who is David Brooks? Is he a Zionist? If the answer is yes, why are we worried about his comments?

  216. The Totalizer says:

What surprises me most about the transcript is UBL’s ability to coopt criticism of his enemies, divide them internally and keep them bickering. This is what makes him so successful in the Moslem world and allows him to remain in hiding in Pakistan. Bin Laden may claim to agree with positions held by Democrats, leftists or libertarians, but he is certainly not a liberal. Keep in mind his goal of creating a theocratic movement. He will tell Republicans what they want to hear (e.g. US troops are fighting terrorists and Iraq is the central front) then in the next breath tell the opposition what they want to hear (corporate interests are destroying the American economy and political sphere of influence). The longer the occupation, the greater the opportunities for him to further his ends.
